About Wethersfield
Wethersfield is a town located in the Farmington Valley region of the Capitol Planning Region in Connecticut. According to the 2020 census, about 18,932 people call it home.
Wethersfield has a rich and ancient history. Around 12,400 years ago—at the end of the last Ice Age—early nomadic peoples set up a campsite near what is now the Farmington River. This site is believed to be one of the first settled areas in southern New England. Over time, other groups returned to the site, and it became buried under river sediments from occasional flooding.
In the winter of 2019, archaeologists uncovered remains of this ancient campsite in Wethersfield, including stone tools and artifacts made from materials found in nearby areas—offering a rare glimpse into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants.
